Fun Homework Games to Help with Learning
GO FISH: Get some index cards (you can get them at the dollar store for, yup you guessed it, $1). Write on one side of the cards what your student is sttruggling with, such as letters, sight words, numbers, shapes, etc. Be sure to use either a pencil or pen and not marker when you write on the card because marker will bleed through. Once the cards are made, your ready to play GO FISH.
Each player of the game recieves the same number of cards (between 5-7). The rest of the cards become the draw pile. Taking turns, each player asks for a card that he/she needs to complete a match. If player 2 has the card that player 1 asks for then player 2 hands the card to player 1 and it is now player 2's turn to ask for a card. If player 2 does not have the card that player 1 asks for then player 2 tells player 1 to GO FISH and player 1 then pulls a card from the draw pile. Now it is player 2's turn to ask for a card. Play continues until no more matches can be made or players run out of cards. The player with the most matches wins.
MEMORY: Use the cards made for the GO FISH game. Put the cards face down on a flat surface. Taking turns, each player turns 2 cards over trying to make a match. If the cards player 1 turns over match then player 1 has to name what is on the cards before they get to take the match out of play. If player 1 can name what is on the cards then player 1 gets to keep the match and if player 1 can't name what is on the cards then player 1 has to turn the cards back over and it is player 2's turn. If the cards that player 1 turns over don't match then the cards get turned back over and it becomes player 2's turn to turn two cards over. The game continues until all of the matches have been found. The player with the most matches wins.
BOO: For this game you will need popsicle sticks or tongue depressors, a marker, and a cup. On one end of the popsicle stick write what you want your student to work on (i.e. letters, sight words, numbers, shapes) with the marker. For every 5 or so popsicle sticks you write on make a stick that says BOO. Once all of the sticks are made, put them writing side down inside the cup.
Taking turns, each player pulls a stick out of the cup. If the player can read the stick then he/she gets to keep the stick and its the next player's turn. If the player cannot read the stick then the stick goes back into the cup writing side down. If the player pulls out a stick that says BOO then that player has to give all of his/her sticks back and the sticks are set aside. The game continues until there are no more sticks in the cup. The player with the most sticks wins.
